Drawing Fundamentals Terms 1-3 is an introductory drawing course designed to enhance students' observation and rendering skills in studio work. Students will engage in carefully designed drawing exercises from the observation of still life, with direct feedback from the tutor on site.
Course Outcomes:
- Demonstrate the ability to observe and describe three-dimensional forms on a two-dimensional plane, creating compositions that appear to pop off the page.
- Learn to measure accurately, plan drawings effectively, and use various shades of tone to add depth and richness to their artwork.
Drawing Fundamentals Term 1 - Geometric Solids
To create the illusion of three-dimensional form on two-dimensional paper, it is helpful to use light to describe it. Pay attention to the values of highlights and shadows, consider the light source, and decide where your lights and shadows will be.
Period: 20 Aug - 15 Oct 2024 (no class on 24 Sep)
Session Length: 8 weeks (Tuesdays 6-8pm)
Outcomes:
- Demonstrate skill with a range of fundamental drawing techniques.
- Demonstrate the ability to effectively draw basic geometric forms in space, including linear perspective systems.
Drawing Fundamentals Term 2 - Real-Life Objects
To understand complex structures, we simplify objects' shapes into basic geometric shapes such as cubes, spheres, and cylinders. Once the shape is understood in a simple form, it’s easier to build it back to the complex structure. This observationally-based drawing course is designed to reinforce and develop the basic drawing skills established in Term 1.
Period: 22 Oct - 10 Dec 2024 (Bookings open in September)
Session Length: 8 weeks (Tuesdays 6-8pm)
Prerequisite: Drawing fundamentals Term 1
Outcomes:
- Geometric Analysis: Demonstrate the analysis of real-life objects by decomposing them into basic geometric shapes, showing an understanding of their form and structure.
- Surface Division:Â Demonstrate the ability to divide complex surfaces into simpler planes and use tonal values effectively to represent different areas.
- Selective Detailing:Â Demonstrate the creation of visual order by selectively describing details, enhancing and highlighting the unique characteristics of an object.
- Tonal Variation:Â Demonstrate proficiency in using different pencil types (HB, 2B, 4B) to create various tones, adding depth and dimension to drawings.
Drawing Fundamentals Term 3 - Soft and Hard Objects
Students will work with a variety of subjects, including a substantial amount of drawing spanning two sessions. Throughout the course, they will explore various objects made from different materials and analyze how these materials should be depicted in drawings.
Period: 21 Jan - 18 March 2025 (no class on 25 Feb) - (Bookings open in November)
Session Length: 8 weeks (Tuesdays 6-8pm)
Prerequisite: Drawing fundamentals Term 2
Outcomes:
- Critical Judgment:Â Articulate critical judgment concerning the idea of quality in drawing.
- Surface Texture Representation: Develop a better understanding of how to accurately represent different surface textures in artwork.
- Time Management: Demonstrate effective time management when working on sustained drawing projects.
